Time is a Giver and a Thief

Time stops for no one. That isn’t a groundbreaking revelation, but at 48, I’ve come to feel its truth in a way I never did before.

Time is a giver—it offers us beautiful moments, experiences, and memories. But it’s also a thief, quietly taking them back when we least expect it. It’s clandestine and we don’t always notice what’s slipping away until it’s already gone.

But isn’t there a kind of beauty in that? It means every moment matters. Being fully present isn’t just a cliché—it’s the only way to truly live. And that’s hard. I know it’s hard. But I promise you, the effort to stay in the now, to embrace each fleeting second, is worth it. Because if time insists on taking, at least we can make the most of everything it gives.

2 Practical Tips

1. Reframe Your Thoughts

At a basic level, staying present starts with a simple reminder: This moment will pass. You won’t get it back. And whatever you’re worrying about, well, it’ll still be there later.

Psychologists call this Cognitive Reframing—a technique that helps shift focus from dwelling on the past or stressing about the future to fully experiencing the present. Try to embrace your thoughts and emotions without letting them control you.

2. Shock Your System (In a Good Way!)

Sometimes, your mind needs a jolt to pull you out of your thoughts. Try clapping your hands, pinching your leg, or dunking your hands in ice water. It works!

This is known as grounding, a method widely used in therapy to reduce anxiety and bring awareness back to the body. Research shows that sudden temperature changes (like dipping your hands in ice water) activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps calm stress and sharpen focus. And clapping or pinching disrupts negative thought loops by engaging the brain’s alertness center. It's a way to re-center the mind!

3 Power Moves

Embrace Daily Mindfulness
Start each day with a small mindfulness practice. Whether it’s deep breathing, a short walk, or simply pausing to take in your surroundings, these micro-moments of awareness help anchor you in the present.

Create Technology Boundaries
Set specific times during the day when you disconnect from screens—no emails, social media, or notifications. This intentional tech break helps you fully engage in your work, relationships, and personal time without digital distractions.

Practice Gratitude Rituals
Keep a gratitude journal or take a moment each day to acknowledge three things you’re grateful for. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s meaningful, making it easier to appreciate the present moment.

Time may be a thief, but we don’t have to let it steal our presence. Small shifts in mindset and daily habits can make all the difference.

So today, take a breath. Look around. Soak in the moment.
